Bio/CV

Profile

My name is Alfonso de Castro. I am an artist who uses photography as a means of expression and combine this activity with teaching college.

I am a photographer and daguerreotypist specialized in portrait, nude and documentary photography. I am working primarily but not only with large format cameras. I also specialized in 19th century photography and alternative printing processes, including Platinum, Palladium, Van Dyke and Cyanotype.

I have a Bachelor of Physics and a Ph.D. in Fine Arts and I am, for years, a full professor of Photography at the Department of Fine Arts of the University of Barcelona.

My research focused on the Technology and Aesthetics of photography, and I have published several articles in the areas of Critics and Technicals. I am often traveling around the world, although lately I have focused mainly on China and I do not lose sight of my origins in Zaragoza and Barcelona.

My work has been influenced by several important traditions, including Street Photography, Classical Portrait and New Documentary, and of course several important photographers in the History of Photography as well as Contemporary Photographers as Ricard Terré, W. E. Smith, G.Winogrand or specially Diane Arbus.

My current vision of photography revolves around the idea that «excess» is something substantial and immanent to photography and this conception of photography can be extended to art in general.
